Amazon Sponsored Products off Amazon: more reach demands control
Ad Meisen · September 3, 2026
- Amazon Sponsored Products off Amazon
- Sponsored Products
- Amazon Ads
- Off-Amazon
From 17 September 2026, Amazon Sponsored Products campaigns can also appear off Amazon. The expansion applies to ten European markets, including the Netherlands and Belgium.
Ads can appear on external websites, in apps and with Amazon creators. Pinterest is the first external platform Amazon names for Europe.
The expansion is on by default. Existing targeting, bids and budgets keep applying.
That last point deserves attention. Amazon gives advertisers more reach, but also more ways to spend budget. So the question is not how many extra impressions appear. The question is whether those impressions produce extra profitable sales.

- The Netherlands and Belgium fall within the expansion.
- Both automatic and manual campaigns can take part.
- The new placements are on by default.
- Existing campaign budgets are used.
- There is no separate bid for external placements.
- You can switch it off per campaign.
- Results appear in the placement report.
- Websites, apps and creators can be excluded.
More reach also means more ways to spend budget
Almost every expansion within Amazon Ads increases the number of moments where advertisers can pay.
Amazon introduces more campaign types, placements, targeting options and bid boosts. On top of that come dynamic bidding, multipliers and automatic recommendations.
That can create value. It also creates more auctions campaigns can enter.
The off-Amazon expansion fits within that development. Existing campaigns automatically get access to extra ad inventory. Amazon uses the same bids and budgets for it.
The commercial logic is clear. More available ad space can lead to more paid clicks and higher ad spend.
For the advertiser, a different outcome counts. The extra clicks have to contribute to sales, margin and structural product growth.
Those interests do not automatically align.
Amazon guards the customer experience and the growth of its own platform. The seller's margin stays the seller's responsibility.
A new Amazon Ads feature is therefore not a recommendation to spend more. It is a new possibility that has to prove itself.
What is Amazon changing about Sponsored Products?
Sponsored Products used to focus mainly on shoppers within Amazon.
Ads appeared in search results, on product pages and other parts of the marketplace. The shopper was usually already close to a purchase.
Amazon now extends that reach to earlier moments in the customer journey. A click leads to the product page on Amazon. So the purchase stays within the existing marketplace environment.
That is an important difference from advertising outside a marketplace. Where traffic from ChatGPT Ads can break marketplace attribution, Amazon keeps the click and the purchase within its own ecosystem. That makes measurement easier. It does not make profitability a given.
For existing external markets, Amazon documents that Sponsored Products can appear off Amazon as an image, video or text, and that text ads can be composed automatically based on the product page and landing page (Amazon Ads). For Europe this is not yet explicitly confirmed.
What is certain: product content gets wider reach. Wrong claims, weak images and unclear copy can therefore also become visible off Amazon.
Does this only apply to automatic campaigns?
No. The expansion is not limited to campaigns with automatic targeting.
Both automatic and manual Sponsored Products campaigns can appear off Amazon. The setting is applied at campaign level.
With automatic targeting, Amazon chooses relevant products and keywords. With manual targeting, Amazon uses the keywords or product targets you set (Amazon Ads).
So the word automatic is about activating the external reach. It says nothing about the campaign's targeting type.
What does off Amazon mean for exact match?
A campaign with manual exact match targeting can also appear off Amazon. That calls for a different reading of exact match.
On Pinterest or an external website, a user often has not run a specific search. Amazon documents that in situations without a search it infers a matching search term itself, based on the product context, and that those derived terms qualify for negative targeting (Amazon Ads).
Our conclusion: off Amazon, exact match does not always mean a shopper typed the exact keyword.
That matters most for campaigns with a tight search goal. A branded campaign, ranking campaign or exact campaign can otherwise buy reach that does not fit its original function.
Where can Sponsored Products appear?
Amazon names three types of external placements:
- Websites and apps of external publishers
- Content of Amazon creators and influencers
Creators can include products in reviews, articles and buying guides. Amazon recommends products based on relevance and prior engagement. The creator ultimately decides which products are featured.
Outside Europe, Amazon already worked with parties such as BuzzFeed, Hearst, Raptive, Lifehacker and Mashable. These parties are not confirmed for the European rollout.
Pinterest is explicitly named. The platform has worked with Amazon on external Sponsored Products placements since 2023 (Pinterest). In June 2026 Pinterest also added links with Amazon Storefronts, letting creators connect Amazon products to their content (Pinterest).
In which European countries does the expansion start?
The expansion applies to campaigns in:
- The Netherlands
- Belgium
- Germany
- France
- Italy
- Spain
- Ireland
- Poland
- Sweden
- The United Kingdom
Amazon informed European advertisers about this by email on 3 September 2026.
The public support page already describes how external Sponsored Products work. Europe is not yet in the public country list at the time of publication. Amazon's direct communication does confirm the start date and the ten European markets.
Is the expansion on by default?
Yes. Amazon activates external reach by default for existing Sponsored Products campaigns.
Advertisers do not have to create new campaigns. The existing targeting, bids and budgets are used.
This makes the change immediately relevant. From 17 September, part of the current budget can go to external placements.
The daily budget does not rise automatically. External clicks use the same campaign budget as search results and product pages within Amazon.
We therefore see a clear risk: external placements can use budget that previously stayed available for traffic with direct purchase intent. A campaign that already runs out of budget early can be constrained even faster.
How do bids work off Amazon?
The maximum bid applies to clicks within and outside Amazon.
Bid boosts for Top of Search and Product Pages do not apply to external placements. Dynamic bidding strategies do stay active (Amazon Ads). Amazon can therefore adjust bids based on the expected chance of a sale. The final CPC stays within the maximum bid.
There is currently no separate bid adjustment for external placements. So advertisers cannot state that an external click is worth, say, fifty percent less. The main available choice is to allow or switch off external reach.
There is also no campaign that advertises exclusively off Amazon. The default option combines reach within and outside Amazon. That limits the ability to test both channels fully separately.
How does Amazon decide who sees the ad?
Within Amazon, ad reach often comes from a search or a product visit. Off Amazon, the system uses additional signals:
- The content of the page
- Earlier search behaviour
- Product interest
- Purchase behaviour
- The fit between product and user
Amazon uses this to find people who may be interested but are not yet actively searching on Amazon. That can build extra demand. It can also produce traffic with less direct purchase intent.
A lower conversion off Amazon is therefore possible. Whether that is acceptable depends on the CPC, the margin and the extra sales that ultimately result.
What control does an advertiser have?
Amazon offers control at five levels.
1. Manage external reach per campaign
Every Sponsored Products campaign gets two options:
- Increase reach off Amazon
- Limit reach to Amazon
The first option is on by default. The second limits the campaign to platforms Amazon runs itself.
The setting is at campaign level. When different ASINs sit within one campaign, the same choice applies to all ASINs. To decide per product, those products must be in separate campaigns.
Several campaigns can be adjusted at once with Bulk Sheets. Amazon added the `Off Amazon ad serving` column for this (Amazon Ads). A full opt-out at account level runs through Amazon Ads support.
2. Guard budget and maximum bids
The campaign budget determines how much Amazon can spend within and outside the platform.
Campaigns that need their budget for branded search traffic or ranking should therefore be assessed carefully. Do not raise a daily budget automatically because Amazon predicts extra sales opportunities. First check where the existing budget goes.
3. Use negative targeting
Amazon shows derived external search terms in the search-term report. Poorly performing terms can be excluded as negatives. That helps limit unwanted contexts.
The report contains only search terms that received at least one click. It therefore does not give a full picture of all external impressions (Amazon Ads).
4. Block websites, apps and creators
Advertisers can upload a deny list at account level. With it you can block:
- Whole domains
- Specific subdomains
- Mobile app IDs
- Individual creator tags
The list applies to active Sponsored Products and Display campaigns. Amazon also reviews external websites, apps and creator content itself. An own list stays sensible for brands with specific guidelines (Amazon Ads).
5. Report external performance separately
Results appear in the Sponsored Products placement report. Through the Amazon Ads API, advertisers can use the `Placement Classification` dimension. This separates results within and outside Amazon.
Check at least: impressions, clicks, CPC, conversion rate, sales, ACOS, share of the campaign budget, TACOS and total sales per ASIN.
Amazon notes that reporting on external placements does not fall within the current MRC accreditation. The data is available, but this specific part is not independently accredited (Amazon Ads).
Which campaigns are better limited to Amazon?
Not every campaign benefits from external reach. Consider limiting for:
- Branded defence campaigns
- Ranking campaigns
- Campaigns with a tight search goal
- Campaigns that already run out of budget early
- Products with low margins
- Products with limited stock
- Products with a low conversion
- Products with weak content or few reviews
These campaigns often have a clear function within Amazon. External reach can blur that goal or use costly budget. A branded campaign has to protect brand traffic. A ranking campaign has to contribute to a specific organic position. Extra reach on Pinterest does not automatically help with that.
Which products suit a controlled test?
Start with mature products that offer financial room. A suitable test product usually has:
- A strong product page
- Good images
- Enough reviews
- A stable conversion
- Reliable stock
- Enough margin
- Clear visual appeal
Categories such as home, kitchen, beauty, lifestyle, hobby and consumer electronics can fit logically with visual discovery. That does not yet mean every campaign in these categories performs well. The results have to prove the benefit.
How do you test the new placements responsibly?
Do not start with the whole account. Select a limited group of campaigns and record the current performance beforehand. Use at least thirty days as a baseline. Also choose comparable campaigns where external reach stays switched off. That gives a practical control group.
Then assess:
- What share of the budget is spent off Amazon.
- How external CPC and conversion develop.
- Whether total sales per ASIN grow.
- Whether the campaign runs out of budget faster.
- What happens to ACOS and TACOS.
- Whether existing sales shift to paid traffic.
- Whether extra revenue delivers enough margin.
Do not draw a conclusion after a few clicks. Give the campaign enough time to build a usable number of visits and sales. Analyse trends over at least fourteen to thirty days. Keep promotions, price changes, stock and organic position separate.
Ask the same questions of every new Amazon Ads feature
New functionality is only valuable when it contributes to the commercial goal. So always ask five questions:
- Does the feature deliver demonstrable extra sales?
- Is there enough margin left after ads and Amazon costs?
- Do the sales come on top of existing sales?
- Does it shift existing traffic to a paid channel?
- Does Amazon offer enough control and reliable reporting?
A recommendation from Amazon is not independent advice. Amazon shows where, according to the platform, more reach or sales is possible. It does not assess whether those sales deliver enough profit within your full cost structure. That assessment stays with the advertiser.
Conclusion
Amazon turns Sponsored Products into a broader ad product. Advertisers get access to external media without setting up a separate DSP campaign. That makes extra reach more accessible. It also makes extra spend easier.
So do not let the expansion run along unchecked. Decide per campaign which goal is protected and which products have room to test. Check budget, margin, placements and total product sales. Look beyond the recommendations in the ad console.
Amazon runs the platform. You guard the return.
